Are dana 44 stub shafts and hubs universal between different makes of vehicles?

Are dana 44 stub shafts and hubs universal between different makes of vehicles? Obviously inner shafts are different due to the differences in axle width. Do most front dana 44 axles have 19 spline stubs that are universal? How about hubs? Do Scout, Chevy, Dodge, Ford, Jeep dana 44's all use similar/same hubs. What is the difference between 8, 6, and 5 lug stub shafts, I know the hub would be different for the 8 lug 6.5" and 5/6 lug 5.5". Please advise.

thanks,

Troy

Ford, Dodge, Chevy/Jeep do not directly mingle. Different stubs and hubs. People do use the Chevy/Ford brakes interchangeably though. You can use the Chevy stub with the Ford hub, but you can't use the snap ring. Some people don't care and some people do. But if you use Dodge, you have to use everything from the knuckle out.............. :lecture:

Go to Warn's site and compare the part numbers. You can see which ones match. (Except the Dodge which I think works with NOTHING)

I was just about to post the same question. I am cutting down a Ford HP D44. So if I were to get alloy shafts then ideally I would need 80's waggy inners and outers from a F-150 (assuming I want to retain the ford hub and brakes). The waggy and the Chevy outers are slightly longer than the Ford (.22"). Is the splined section longer or is the splined section the same length and the whole shaft is longer?

You can use Chevy knuckles, small bearing spindles, calipers and backing plates with Ford rotors and hubs.Chevy knuckles are stronger than Ford. The Chevy splined section is longer.

Cann't speak much for Ford but you guys are sooo off on the Dodge stuff its too funny. If you don't know what your talking about its best not to make things up.

ANYWAY, my front diff is a wide trac waggy D44 with Dodge 8 bolt outers. From 1980 up the Dodge spindles.outer shafts are identical to the Chev/Jeep 6 bolt stuff. The spindles that came with my Waggy diff are the exact same as my Dodge ones. Also I have interchanged Dodge spindles with the Chevy 6 bolt ones and have not noticed a difference. No idea how Chevy 8bolt or Ford stuff compares up.

As for outer stubs the Dodge outers and Jeep/Waggy outers were the same except that some have 2 snap ring grooves and some just have one. Depends on if it had locking hubs or blanks. Hope this helps.

Thanks Magoo, I was looking for that site, I was on it before. So does the .22" difference between Chevy and Ford stubs matter in using Chevy stubs in a Ford axle? The Ford stub in a Chevy axle would be easier because the Ford stub is shorter right or will they not intermingle? How about the hubs? I looked at the Warn site and it appears that all 19 spline stub dana 44 axle hubs are interchangeable right? Since hubs, outer stubs and u-joints seem to break the easiest, it's good to know what works and what doesn't.
Thanks for all the info.

It would be easier to tell us what combo of knuckle, spindle and hub you are running.

Then I can tell you which shaft you are supposed to have.
