hey all,

first off, lets not make this into a thread bashing me for not having a cage yet, i am working on a design based on where i want my spare and toolboxes mounted and building/designing around them.

after beating up my first stock gas tank, i took the gas tank out of the parts XJ i have and this is what i did, props to HACKEDXJ, i got the idea from him.

one less skid plate that i need to worry about.

check out the new clearance.

Where do you put your stuff?

there is a huge rubbermaid tote behind the passenger seat full of large tools and spare parts where the rear seat used to be between the tote and the passenger seat, there is a bucket full of fluids and a few coolant bottles.

behind the drivers seat there is a tool box full of the smaller tools, and the solenoid for the ARB is mounted under where the seat used to fold down. the hilift jack is between the tank and the tailgate.

believe me there is plenty of room there, all of my tools are in there and i have done an engine swap and lift kits, etc.

the only thing that is not in there right now is the spare tire, which will be mounted just above the gas tank, on the cage, similar to C-ROKs spare is mounted.

You could drop a C-note for a 12 gal fuel cell and save a bunch of space.
But I do like the clean line underneath, just not sure rachet straps are the best way to secure 150 lbs of shifting center of gravity liquid.

hmm...you are right, the gas tank weighs a lot more than the spare tire. how would you suggest i hold that bia down?

Build a box to put it in? or a few bolts through the bed, with say 1/8th plate reinforcing the floor and 1/8th plate or angle to grab the top of the tank with allthread rods down to the bottom plates.
Lots of ways, but basically sandwich the tank between something that will secure it.
Or spring for a fuel cell, but you still need to fab a restraint for it.

I'd guess you are not a smoker if your driving that? I wouldn't put a stock tank inside as it is definately not designed for it. Buy a fuel cell and install it. They may be a bit pricey, but should be worth it. Your ground clearance looks good though.

when i had the tank in the bed of my tacoma, with the rubber fuel lines hanging off it, and the filler neck removed, i could smell gas while driving with the rear slider window open....with everything hooked up in the back of the XJ, i cant smell any gas, the whir of the pump is a little more noticeable tho.

Daffy,
would the stock gas tank straps be sufficient to sandwich the tank to the floor (just gotta come up with mounting)? the ratchet straps seem to hold it down pretty well, but i will bolt it down a bit differently, and hopefully build a box around it to protect it and keep it more enclosed?

-Tim

the stock straps should do fine, they were designed by the manufacture werent they? If they held up under the jeep why not inside it? Just find a way to secure them to the floor and you should be good. Also you might make a bracket to hold the filler neck also (tied into the cage somehow). Just remember your center of gravity is a little higher now with said ever moving liquid.

What would smoking have to do with the fuel tank in the back??? Its designed to hold fuel in. There also is no vent lines outside of the fuel cap. So I guess you are saying that if you drive over a road flare :flame: Boom eh??

thanks pornstar at least you understand

having the fuel tank on top of the floor rather than under the floor makes no difference what-so-ever...it still holds gasoline the same way it did before, and people flick cigs out the window all day long, and i drive over the embers (everybody has seen them spark on the ground at night)

the point that was brought up about the rachet straps not being enough, and the marginally higher COG are the only negatives at this point...im not going to blow up or die from fumes. lol

-Tim

hmmm....you could fab up something with the old straps i.e you could notch a mounting hole for the one end of the strap to slide into and then bolt the other side, similar to the way it is underneath the jeep... or take an original gas tank skid and stick it on top of the tank...then you could put crap on it and what not.

That's the most hillbilly thing I've seen all day. I love it...

"I took off my tank and stuck it in the back. That's a mod!"

That's friggin great...

Looks like you missed the part that I wouldn't do it. I've seen cig butts land in some wierd places. If I still smoked, it wouldn't suprise me if I tossed one on top of that tank, right where that was a fuel leak.
Why not opt for a fuel cell? It would look much better, and be easier to mount. That is what I was getting at.

haha, yep just like 256 said, welcome to the south...and yeah i consider it a mod, because it was an improvement

i still think its safer than banging up the tank on the rocks, i ripped out my exhaust system last trail ride, dont want the fuel tank to be next.

steel for a skid plate woulda cost me close to $100, this cost me $9 in fuel hose.

-Tim

I would love to see how you would secure it properly....until then....unsafe and just plain stupid.

If you are going to do this, do it right, get a fuel cell.
