So as to not hijack scotts thread....

(I'm serious, this isn't me dickin around :paperwork )

I always thought that it was links at the body/frame

Clayton terms these as arms for his 3 link setup

These are radius arms for my Range Rover
phta_large.jpg

I assumed they were different as the arm from the rover has no joint...

What really dictates the term 3 link or 4 link?

It will be which of us (including myself) idiots you ask!

IMO. Links are forward and aft axle housing locators.

Radius arms are 2 links
Wishbone top or lower with 2 straight upper or lower arms is a 3 link
3 separate arm (link mine or Goats) is a 3 link
4 separate arms is a 4 link

Track bars are not usually considered a link. Although I will call it one to piss someone off if needed. :D

So the Claytons a 2 link, just like my stock rangie arm setup by that meaning....si?

YES!

However doesn't rover call them something weird?

Radius arms...but they call the bushings "Bushes"

Damn freaks. Wait till they see the Range Panzer...it will blow the flares off their "wings"

oh, and the track-bar is called a Panhard bar....

A nod's as good as a wink to a blind man....

Hinley's right, trackbars aren't considered links. But panhards are :D :laugh2: :laugh2:

I've always considered it attachment points at the axle but a radius arm only counts as one each even if it's two into one like Claytons. Then you count the frame end.

Panhards are ALWAYS counted as a link point. Just often forgotten.
Hinkley's coocoo but he sure makes nice Nerf bars :kissyou:

Why is a panhard considered a link and a track-bar isn't?

They are the same thing, C is just messing with things :D

Damn, up is down, black is white!

Here I am thinking I have it all together for the last few years...then comes you mid-western and west coasters tweakin my New England idea of what suspension is! DAMN YOU ALL!

Now you just need to get CRASHitt's take on it all and you should be good and screwed. :D

Count the links however you want and then say "and a trackbar" if you don't want to count it or say "with the track bar" if you want to count it.

Then it's as easy as WITH and AND.

Easy?

Now how do you describe a leaf spring system with a track bar?
Or a linked leaf system??
Are the leaves still links?

What direction was up again? :D

So is a "5-link" just a 4-link + track bar, just misnamed (assuming track bar's don't count)?

Yes.
That's why I think you should count the trackbar. How else do you get 5 links??

However, I must agree with Hinkley, SAE doesn't consider a trackbar or panhard in the link count terminology, they use the "with trackbar" method.

Wait till you see URF's latest, designed by Mrs. CRASH herself.

One simple link, no muss, no fuss.

Pantsuit girl tested it for me. She'd never experienced a link that large.
